REVIEW — “Love Punch”

If you are tired of the many huge, summer tent-pole, spectacle movies out right now, instead here’s a simple, somewhat silly, British romantic comedy.

This improbably rom-com revolves around an amicable divorced couple Richard (Pierce Brosnan) and Kate.(Emma Thompson)  Through a quick series of events that are light on the details, Richard’s company is bought, and the stock run into the ground, rendering the divorced couple effectively broke.  When their attempts to reason with the man who did this fail, they instead decide to steal his prize diamond and essentially spend an exciting & romantic weekend together in Paris.

With a plot synopsis like that, it’s obvious this film exists outside the realm of any believability.  But who cares??  Bronson and Thompson have wonderful chemistry together, and the lighthearted, silly British humor is a welcomed change after the slew of R-rated comedies of the past few years.  Bronson even has a few throwbacks to his 007 days at at times you fully expect him to introduce himself as “Bond, Geriatric Bond”

While not to be taken seriously at any moment, this is nice, fun little flick if you are looking for a change of pace.  Aimed more towards the older generations it may be the perfect date movie if you are trying to avoid the swarm of juveniles at the multiplex this weekend.
